Do attention-deficit/hyperactivity symptoms influence treatment outcome in gambling disorder?

Introduction
Numerous studies point to the comorbidity between gambling disorder (GD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, there is a lack of research exploring how ADHD symptoms might influence psychological treatment outcomes for GD.
ObjectivesTherefore, we aimed to explore differences between patients with GD with and without ADHD symptoms regarding psychopathology, personality, sociodemographic and especially treatment outcome measures.
MethodsThis longitudinal study included n=170 patients with GD receiving 16 sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in a specialized unit of a public hospital. Multiple self-reported instruments were used to assess GD severity, personality, ADHD and other symptoms and sociodemographic measures prior to treatment.
ResultsA clinical profile characterized by greater GD severity, higher psychopathology and impulsivity, and less adaptive personality features was observed in patients with self-reported ADHD symptoms compared to those without. No significant differences in treatment response (measured by dropout and relapse rates) were reported between the two groups. However, patients with ADHD symptoms described more severe relapses (more money gambled) and GD patients who relapsed scored higher on measures of ADHD, particularly inattention.
ConclusionsIndividuals with GD and ADHD may experience more severe relapses following treatment, suggesting a need for more vigilant follow-up and interventions for patients with this comorbidity.

Introduction
COVID19 lockdown is having a significant impact on mental health, patients with eating disorders (ED) are particularly vulnerable.
Objectives1) To explore changes in eating and other psychological features due to confinement in patients with ED from various European and Asian countries; and 2) to assess differences related to diagnostic subtypes, age and geography.
MethodsThe sample comprised 829 participants, diagnosed with an ED according to DSM-5 criteria from specialized ED units in Europe and Asia. Participants were assessed using the COVID19 Isolation Scale (CIES).
ResultsOn one hand, patients with Binge Eating Disorder experienced the highest impact on weight and ED symptoms due to confinement. Together with subjects diagnosed with Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OFSED), they also experienced a deterioration in general psychological state. On the other hand, there was less symptomatic impact on people with Bulimia Nervosa or Anorexia Nervosa and asian and younger individuals appeared to be more resilient in this situation.
ConclusionsThe impact of COVID varied by cultural context and individual variation in age and form of illness. Services may need to target preventive measures and adapting therapeutic approaches for the most vulnerable patients.

Field studies at Arlington, WI, and LeSueur, MN, were conducted in 1996 and 1997 to evaluate tolerance of six sweet corn hybrids to RPA 201772 applied preemergence at 79 to 210 g/ha. Both years the most sensitive hybrid at the Wisconsin site was ‘Zenith,’ with yield reductions of 14 and 22% at 210 g/ha (twice the labeled rate). ‘Excellency,’ ‘Green Giant 43,’ and ‘Jubilee’ tolerated RPA 201772 at 158 g/ha or less. The least tolerant hybrids in Minnesota were ‘Green Giant 6′ and Jubilee, and the most tolerant hybrids were Green Giant 43 and ‘Rogers 9056.’ Injury from RPA 201772 increased as application dose increased. The greatest risk of injury from RPA 201772 appear to be with Green Giant 6, Zenith, and Jubilee, especially on coarser textured soils with low organic matter. Excellency, Green Giant 43, and Rogers 9056 appeared to be the most tolerant. Because of the differential hybrid response to RPA 201772 across sites and years, more hybrid response data needs to be generated before RPA 201772 is labeled in sweet corn.

The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of gas motion created by a strong explosion in an atmosphere whose density is an exponential function of altitude. For the near field (i.e. short times after initiation), an exact analytical solution of the equations of motion is obtained by means of a perturbation technique. For the far field (i.e. long times after initiation), a similarity solution associated with a logarithmic front trajectory is derived. The two are shown to be well matched with each other. Finally, a fully-algebraic approximate solution is given that qualitatively reproduces all the salient features of the exact and asymptotic solutions, while quantitatively it is in fair agreement with their results.

In order to investigate the effects of dietary fibre (DF) characteristics on carbohydrate degradation and the metabolism in the large intestine, pigs were fed on four rye-bread diets (based on whole rye, pericarp/testa, aleurone or endosperm) with differences in characteristics and amount of DF. The degradability of DF in the large intestine varied greatly between diets. The pericarp/testa DF was hardly degraded in the large intestine, whereas endosperm DF was extensively and rapidly degraded in the caecum. Caecal degradation of aleurone DF was also limited, leaving more material to be degraded in the colon. The undegradable pericarp/testa DF was characterized by high contents of lignin, cellulose, ferulic acids and highly substituted arabinoxylans (the major DF component in rye). Ingestion of this diet resulted in increased faecal bulk and reduced transit time, but with low colonic pH and the lowest concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). The aleurone diet, on the other hand, led to a fermentation pattern which may be considered more optimal, with lower colonic pH and higher concentrations of SCFA, in particular butyric acid. Despite the large differences in carbohydrate fermentation only minor significant effects on the presence of protein degradation products and on histological measurements (height and diameter of colonic crypts and thickness of the muscularis externa) were observed.
